Iran's President Raisi killed in helicopter crash
Iran's President, Ebrahim Raisi, has tragically passed away at the age of 63 in a helicopter crash, as confirmed by the government. Among the casualties was Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and seven others.
This incident unfolds amidst heightened tensions in the Middle East, particularly with the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The helicopter crash occurred following Iran's recent drone-and-missile retaliation against Israel in response to an attack on its diplomatic compound in Damascus.
Raisi, known for his hardline stance, assumed the presidency in a notably uncompetitive election in 2021. His tenure was marked by a tightening grip on dissent, notably amid protests led by the youth against clerical rule.
As the second-most influential figure in Iran's political hierarchy, after Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Raisi's passing leaves a significant void. Per the Iranian Constitution, the role of the president will be assumed by the first vice president in the wake of his demise.
